MUSIC FROM THE LEBENSLUST UNIVERSE.

Universum Lebenslust grew out of the radio, video and music productions surrounding LebenslustTV® and the Mach Dir Lebenslust broadcasting format.

Songs, jingles and productions by Bastian Lee Jones became recurring elements across radio broadcasts, video podcasts and collaborative media projects.

The physical edition brought this material together as a ten-track album released through EARMErecords / LebenslustTV®.

The visual concept consists of a CD and printed cardboard sleeve designed by Lia & Geoffrey Meer.

A companion remix edition had also been prepared for production, but the planned rollout was ultimately interrupted during the pandemic period.

THE JINGLE

The opening jingle is based on “Hast Du Mich Auch Lieb”, the first track from the Vatersprache project. The music was also used as a recurring radio and video-podcast signature for LebenslustTV®.

KIAN LEE CONVENTION · EP

Recorded entirely in analogue using a Tascam tape machine, the Kian Lee Convention EP brings together vocals, piano, keyboards, guitars, bass, drums, sound design and layered backing vocals.

The sessions were developed with musician and producer Martin, whose background as a drummer, guitarist and devoted Queen listener strongly shaped the production approach.

The record grew beyond the studio itself. Its intro and outro incorporate sound collages recorded in Dublin, Ireland, Indonesia and Germany, turning the EP into both a musical and geographic document of the period.

All songs were written by Kian Lee, with the exception of “Gone” — music by Kian Lee, lyrics by Lars Erdmann. The song later became a UK Songwriting Contest finalist.

Additional backing vocals by Anne Lory and Eva Kaiser.

The visual concept was built around the exposed brick wall of Bastian Lee Jones’ studio and later Livingroom Concert setting. Original paintings were commissioned from FLOWRENT and incorporated into the release artwork.

The physical edition was produced with printed cardboard packaging and booklets manufactured in Indonesia.

Surviving archive material includes the original oil painting, hand-written song sketches and scores, analogue master tape, promotional stickers, original stage garments and the remaining physical copies.

Each surviving copy belongs to the final stock of the original physical edition.

“Songs You Know” is a collection of interpretations of songs by artists and writers who have accompanied and inspired Bastian Lee Jones.

The album was conceived partly as a way of reaching new listeners online through familiar repertoire, while keeping each interpretation recognizably personal in arrangement, performance and visual presentation.

The visual concept introduced another variation of recurring Bastian Lee Jones design elements: white backgrounds, dark glasses, a black bow tie and a white tuxedo shirt — combined here with colourful, self-designed paper hats. Photography by Bastian Lee Jones. Booklet layout by Thomas Anker.

The booklet also documents support from HAPPY MUSIC SHOP and Adrian Tapeten in Berlin-Schöneberg and includes elements of the recurring BLJ crown drawings.

The release was presented live at a Badehaus concert together with the Nelson Mandela tribute project, with Claudia Corsa (EDELSTERN) hosting and Bastian Lee Jones & Band and Jambalayas performing.

One detail became part of the release story: the physical CDs had not yet arrived in time for the concert.

RECORD RELEASE · BADEHAUS BERLIN

The release period culminated in a live concert at Badehaus Berlin, hosted by Claudia Corsa and featuring Bastian Lee Jones & Band alongside Jambalayas.

The evening also became part of the visual production surrounding the Nelson Mandela Tribute — connecting the physical release period with material that would later appear in the digital edition of Sweet Imperfections III.

The Nelson Mandela Tribute is not included on the original physical edition of Sweet Imperfections III Live. It was subsequently added as a bonus track to the digital release.

The concert photographs preserve a moment in which release presentation, live performance and video production came together on the same stage.

NELSON MANDELA TRIBUTE · LIVE AT BADEHAUS BERLIN

Nelson Mandela died on 5 December 2013. In the days that followed, Bastian Lee Jones wrote and produced a tribute song in response to the moment.

Just eleven days later, the piece was performed at Badehaus Berlin during the record-release concert.

The performance was not conceived as a polished studio reconstruction. The live recording and video were captured in a single take in front of the audience.

WATCH THE LIVE PERFORMANCE

For Bastian Lee Jones, the pressure of the moment was considerable: a newly written tribute, a live audience, cameras running, and no second attempt built into the concept.

The take worked.

That performance became the release recording of the Nelson Mandela Tribute, later included as a bonus track on the digital edition of Sweet Imperfections III.

The track does not appear on the original physical edition.

SWEET IMPERFECTIONS III

The story of Sweet Imperfections III did not end with the original physical release. The live era continued in digital form with the addition of “Nelson Mandela (Bonus Track)”, a one-take audience recording created under intense pressure and later included as a bonus track on the digital edition.

The track does not appear on the original physical CD.

FROM A BAND TO A LIVE RECORD.

Sweet Imperfections III Live began with the formation of the first Bastian Lee Jones & Band line-up.

The songs were developed in the band’s own rehearsal space. Guitar lines, bass parts, dynamics and arrangements were worked out not only for the stage, but with a future studio recording already in mind.

GREVE Studio — with its Steinway & Sons grand piano — was intended to become the studio environment for that next stage.

First came the concert.

Potsdam had long been a good place for Bastian Lee Jones, and the Kulturhaus Babelsberg became the setting for the first Bastian Lee Jones & Band concert.

GREVE Studio recorded the performance in audio and video.

The audience response, encores and standing ovations changed the plan.

Listening back to the concert recordings, Bastian Lee Jones decided not to reconstruct the material in the studio.

The live recording became the album.

A LIVE TRILOGY

The release became the third chapter in a developing sequence of live recordings.

Sweet Imperfections I — still unreleased — documents a more intimate musical world around the Grotrian-Steinweg grand piano, moving between classical repertoire, broadcast-related material and songs such as Elton John’s “Song for Guy”.

Sweet Imperfections II later became Livingroom Concerts Berlin II — solo performances recorded around the grand piano in the living-room concert setting.

Sweet Imperfections III opened the frame completely:

Bastian Lee Jones & Band.

Piano, voice, guitars, bass and drums — a live band captured in the moment.

VISUAL IDENTITY

Photography for the visual campaign was created by Cindy Ramspeck.

The album artwork translated Bastian Lee Jones’ concept into a retro, disco-influenced visual language: coloured panels, silhouettes of the musicians and the image of the frontman apparently moving through the composition.

The styling continued recurring elements of the Bastian Lee Jones visual identity: Ray-Ban sunglasses, slim tie, fitted Lee jeans, Italian Vans-style leather shoes, and a self-designed tuxedo jacket and white tuxedo shirt produced in Indonesia.

Album layout by SHAO, based on the concept by Bastian Lee Jones.

The visual campaign developed further through concert posters and promotional material, including designs by Thomas Anker.
